Summary
1920, Harihar with wife Sarbajaya and 10 year old son Apuhas moved to the holy city of Banaras. Harihar earns ameager by reciting religious scriptures. Tragedy strikeswhen Harihar fall ill with fever and collapses at theriverbank and dies soon after. The mother Sarbajayadecides to relocate to her uncle^'s village where Apuresumes his education at the local school. Apu, nowsixteen wins a scholarship and departs for Calcutta,leaving his mother alone. It breaks Sarbajaya^'s heart, butshe relents. Engulfed in city life-studying during the dayand working in a printing press at night, Apu grows awayfrom his mother. His visits get shorter as the timepasses. This emotional distance unnoticed by the growingApu, hurts Sarbajaya deeply. On a night sparkling withdancing fireflies, Sarbajaya dies. Apu comes back to anempty house. He grieves for his mother, but soon findsstrength to leave the village for the last time, to carryon with his new life in the city...
