Summary	This document provides support to policymakers and the business sector in enhancing awareness and the sharing of experience and good practices among the competent authorities, operators and the public, and for the better harmonization of the regulations and requirements concerning the safety of Tailings Management Facilities (TMFs) in the ECE region.
Summary	The safety guidelines and good practices were endorsed by the Conference of the Parties to the Industrial Accidents Convention at its fifth meeting (Geneva, 2527 November 2008) and by the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention at its fifth session (Geneva, 1012 November 2009). Authorities, tailings management facility operators and the public are invited to apply these guidelines and good practices, which are intended to contribute to limiting the number of accidents at tailings management facilities and the severity of their consequences for human health and the environment.
